It’s week four of my Nutrition, Health and Lifestyles class, and I am excited to learn more about superfoods. Superfoods are functional foods that serve a purpose- reduce risk of disease, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and slow down the aging process. Who wouldn’t want these awesome benefits from foods?
I’ve been fighting a cold over the past week and it finally won on Sunday. Now, I’m eating nutritious foods so I can feel better.
When the weekend came to an end, I couldn’t wait to get home and make a spinach and berry protein smoothie. It seems to always make me feel 1000% better!
Spinach, blueberries and bananas are superfoods that can help fight colds and build the immune system. When it comes to nutrient content, the darker the greens the better. So, when you’re defending yourself from cold and flu season choose spinach and kale over iceberg lettuce.
Blueberries are antioxidant powerhouses in every bite. They are also immunity boosters when grown wild and have the most active antioxidants of any fresh fruit. Bananas are great for potassium and energy- and this fruit helps de-bloat after eating high sodium soups or foods.
Nothing’s better on a windy fall day than a bowl of chicken noodle soup and a hot steaming cup of tea. These drinks/foods below have been helping me control my cold symptoms:

Spinach and berry protein shake

Mint and cucumber infused water

A classic: Chicken noodle soup

Mhmm apples with honey and cinnamon

Chai tea with honey and cinnamon
“I hope your day is as good as your first sip of tea.”
Do you have any cold remedies or recipes you make when you’re sick? Be sure to take good care of yourself when you’re not feeling well!
